Iconclastic alto saxophonist/composer.   Coleman’s early career is a story of considerable adversity and struggle as he tried to find a way to express his unique ideas within the restrictions of then-modern jazz. His eventual success (early recordings in 1958 and 1959 for Contemporary, followed by highly influential sessions for Atlantic, 1959 - 1961, and a long if spottily recorded career, including several symphonic works) greatly enriched modern jazz.
